The Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI) is a consortium of over 80 institutions founded in 2006 to increase the number of domestic students at HSIs who enter and complete undergraduate and graduate program in computing. CAHSI is led by Dr. Gates from UTEP. CAHSI has been involved in significant efforts with industry partners and other groups to build research capacity at HSIs, in particular in the AI area. A significant CAHSI initiatives that informed the Institute was a April 25-27, 2024 “CAHSI Convening: Broadening Participation in AI” meeting at the Microsoft Innovation & Policy Center in Washington DC. The purpose of this meeting was to engage researchers, educators, community partners, industry representatives, national laboratories members, and government entities in discussions regarding increasing broadening participation in AI. The report from the convening outlines recommendations regarding efforts to democratize AI.
